TEN BEST FILMS OF 2009

List of Ten Best Films of 2009:

1) Vicky Christina Barcelona – directed by Woody Allen. Watch out for Penelope Cruz’s explosive Oscar Winning performance as a crazy Spanish lover.

2) The Wrestler – directed by Darren Aronofsky – Mickey Rourke’s mean and brilliant comeback as a has been kick-ass Trailer Park Wrestler. Also featuring superb performances by Marisa Tomei and Evan Rachel Wood.

 

 

3) Slumdog Millionaire -directed by Danny Boyle

4) Milk – directed by Gus Van Sant – superb portrayal of Activism and Martyrdom in 1970’s San Francisco

5) The Reader – directed by Stephen Daldry – another Oscar winner from the director of The Hours featuring a complex role by Kate Winslet. Based on the best selling novel by German author Bernhard Schlink

6)  The Young Victoria directed by Jean-Marc Vallee. Featuring a wonderful performance by Emily Blunt as the Young monarchy taking over an Empire

7) Anti-Christ – directed by Lars von Trier – controversial and perverse. Charlotte Gainsbourg won best Actress at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival.

8)  Public Enemies directed by Michael Mann featuring a wonderful performance by Johnny Depp as the American Gangster John Dillinger along with Oscar winner Marion Cotillard.

9) Inglorious Basterds directed by Quentin Tarantino. The Pulp Fiction take on war against the Nazi’s! Watch out for the Oscar winning performance by Christoph Waltz as the notorious Nazi.

10) District 9 directed by Neil Blomkamp. For showing that aliens really do arrive in other cities on earth! Brilliant for its sheer originality and also proving that South Africa can be the backdrop for a lot more than purely political narratives.
