The Arrival of Dorothy
Wicked: For Good

Director: Jon M. Chu
Cast: Cynthia Erivo, Jeff Goldblum, Ariana Grande, Jonathan Bailey, Michelle Yeoh, Ethan Slater, Colman Domingo, Michelle Yeoh, Bowen Yang, Bronwyn James
Running Time: 2 hours and 17 minutes
Film Rating: 8 out of 10
Crazy, Rich Asians and In The Heights director Jon M. Chu directs an elegant sequel to Wicked in Wicked: For Good set again in Oz. This time Ariana Grande steals the limelight in her sparkling pink bubble as the ultimate fairy Glinda. Although she is a witch, she is the Good witch and her opposite Elphaba expertly played again by Cynthia Erivo is being demonised in the land of Oz by Madame Morible, master manipulator played by Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere All at Once) who is convincing the general vibrant population that Elphaba is indeed the wicked witch of the west.

As the dynamic between Glinda and Elphaba is heightened by the announcement of the wedding between Glinda and the extremely handsome and buff Fiyero played by Jonathan Bailey, the Wizard of Oz wonderfully played by Jeff Goldblum is hiding a dark secret in which Elphaba is determined to uncover.
Wicked: For Good is an excellent musical film with exceptionally high production values, gorgeous costumes by Oscar winning costume designer Paul Tazewell (Wicked) and extravagant production design by Nathan Crowley yet it is a far different film to Wicked.

Firstly, Wicked was all about Elphaba while Wicked: For Good is all about Glinda and Ariana Grande deserves another Oscar nomination for her brilliant portrayal of that brittle and demanding princess that is Glinda whose pink bubble gets rightly pricked when Fiyero leaves her at the altar for her nemesis.

In the midst of all the chaos at Oz, Madame Morible creates a hurricane which naturally brings in Dorothy fresh from Kansas along with the Tin Man and Scarecrow who all proceed down the yellow brick road to pander to the wishes of the Wizard of Oz. Dorothy unknowingly stole Elphaba’s dead sister’s sparkling ruby slippers.
Interestingly the arrival of Dorothy is not the focal point of Wicked: For Good it is more of a side story. We catch glimpses of Dorothy in a closet, running along the yellow brick road and hell bent on destroying Elphaba. Remember this is the back story of The Wizard of Oz. Jon M. Chu pays cinematic homage to the infamous 1939 Oscar winning film The Wizard of Oz but he doesn’t remake that story. That’s a classic best left untouched.

Wicked: For Good focuses on the bizarre love triangle between Glinda, Elphaba and Fiyero but of the three it is by far Glinda that steals this gorgeous show.
The musical numbers in Wicked: For Good are well-executed, definitely appealing to those that love big Hollywood musicals. This film sequel should do well at the 2026 Oscar nominations.
Wicked: For Good is a truly magical film which is high value entertainment best seen on the biggest screen possible. Ariana Grande is absolutely superb in this film upstaging Dorothy and coming to terms with Elphaba’s unrelenting power.

Highly recommended viewing for those that loved the first film, Wicked: For Good gets a film rating of 8 out of 10. Magical, enchanting and definitely entertaining.
Only Heroes Left Alive
Jurassic World: Rebirth

Director: Gareth Edwards
Cast: Scarlett Johansson, Rupert Friend, Jonathan Bailey, Mahershala Ali, Manuel Garcia-Ruflo, Ed Skrein, Bechir Sylvain, Luna Blaise, David Iacono, Audrina Miranda
Running Time: 2 hours and 13 minutes
Film Rating: 7.5 out of 10
Rogue One and Godzilla director Gareth Edwards returns to the big screen with the latest instalment of the Jurassic franchise in the impressive new chapter, Jurassic World: Rebirth.
Unlike 2022’s explosive and character heavy Jurassic World: Dominion, Jurassic World: Rebirth has a much tighter narrative and centres on the stories of four characters.

Rupert Friend (Canary Black, Asteroid City, The French Dispatch) plays slimy and well suited pharmaceutical executive Martin Krebs who hires operations expert Zora Bennett wonderfully played by Oscar nominee Scarlett Johansson (JoJo Rabbit, Marriage Story) to lead an expedition to the equator to extract DNA from three species of dinosaurs living on a remote tropical island in a bid to find the ingredients for a new drug to prevent cardiac arrests in humans. Zora Bennett is joined by palaeontologist Dr Henry Loomis expertly played by Jonathan Bailey (Wicked, Testament of Youth) as they head to the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.
The trio are joined by boat captain Duncan Kincaid played by two time Oscar winner Mahershala Ali (Moonlight, Green Book) as they head to into the unknown to an island so treacherous that only heroes are left alive.

Parallel to their expedition, is a father sailing across the Atlantic with his two daughters, Reuben Delgado played by Manuel Garcia-Rulfo (The Magnificent Seven, Murder on the Orient Express) whose beautiful yacht is capsized by a monstrous prehistoric sea creature

Reuben and his daughters are rescued by Zora’s expedition but soon things go horribly wrong just before they reach the island.
The storyline of Jurassic World: Rebirth resembles more of a horror thriller than an adventure narrative as the human contingent are slowly decimated by a T Rex and a couple more nefarious dinosaurs. This film is part a disaster movie and a survival tale but what makes it so much fun are the exciting sequences in which the characters try to outwit these prehistoric menaces, particularly the scene with the inflatable boat on the murky river and the end sequence in an abandoned DNA testing station complete with an eerie backup generator.

From falling off cliffs to river rafting, from escaping burning boats to dodging dangerous dinosaurs, Jurassic World: Rebirth delivers on the entertainment front with an enthusiastic cast that keeps the survival narrative thrilling and edgy. The production design and stunts are amazing assisted by a great cast held together by Scarlett Johansson and Mahershala Ali in a film expertly directed by Gareth Edwards who keeps the pacing this side of panicky and that side of enthralling. The audience won’t be disappointed.

Jurassic World: Rebirth gets a film rating of 7.5 out of 10 and is fine entertainment for those that love the Jurassic franchise and are fans of vicious monster films. Highly recommended viewing. See it on the big screen.
The Evolution of a Witch
Wicked Part One

Director: Jon M. Chu
Cast: Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo, Jonathan Bailey, Michelle Yeoh, Jeff Goldblum, Ethan Slater, Peter Dinklage
Running Time: 2 hours 40 minutes
Film Rating: 8 out of 10
Crazy Rich Asians and In the Heights director Jon M. Chu lands cinematic gold, with his dazzling interpretation of the hit broadway musical Wicked about the origins of the Wicked Witch of the West from the Wizard of Oz.

Wicked Part 1 is a stunningly beautiful and bold interpretation of a fantasy tale about the origins of a witch. In this case it is the absolutely brilliant Oscar worthy performance of Cynthia Erivo (Harriet, Widows) who plays Elphaba alongside British pop star Ariana Grande who is fabulous and very pink as Galinda complete with sparkling shoes, handbags and enough accessories to make any teenage girl envious.
Set within the broader Wizard of Oz universe, Glinda and Elphaba meet at University before they both become witches but unfortunately they are at odds with each other. Glinda is blonde and beautiful, vain and popular whereas Elphaba is green and is in some sense a social pariah, a product of an illicit affair that her mother had in which Elphaba was born bright green like the sparkling Emerald City.

Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh (Everything, Everywhere all at Once) plays Madame Morrible as the mistress of magic at the University where both aspiring witches are studying. All is not well in the land when the talking animals are being ostracized and then Galinda is completely distracted by the arrival of the dashing man on a horse Fiyero, wonderfully played with sufficient panache by Fellow Travellers star Jonathan Bailey.

Elphaba tries to become popular while struggling with her own self-acceptance. Cynthia Erivo, besides her superb singing is really an extraordinary actress and suitably well cast in the role of the singing and flying witch.
Wicked Part One is a dazzling film, complete fantasy liberally peppered with fantastic songs and stunning dance numbers. If you are a musical theatre producer or a choreographer then go and see this musical.
As a psychedelic fantasy musical, Wicked Part One is extraordinary with lavish production design by Nathan Crowley who also deserves an Oscar nomination along with the costume designer Paul Tazewell. The pair really go to town with the amazing sets and incredible costumes especially in the glittering Emerald City.

As Elphaba and Galinda travel on a sleek emerald train to the Emerald City to see the Wonderful Wizard of Oz, they soon discover that the wily wizard is not as noble as one might anticipate. Enter the veteran actor Jeff Goldblum (Jurassic Park, The Grand Budapest Hotel) who steals the scene as the industrialist like Wizard who soon discovers Elphaba’s real power.
The songs are amazing, the costumes and sets are spectacular but at two and half hours long there were some sections the director could have cut.

What makes Wicked Part One such an enjoyable film is the performance of Cynthia Erivo, she really takes the iconic role of the Wicked Witch of the West and moulds it into something formidable, a fascinating story of how a young awkward girl transforms into a witch hated and ostracized by the Land of Oz. Society will do that to a perceived outcast.
Lavish, loud and beautifully orchestrated Wicked Part One is recommended viewing and gets a film rating of 8 out of 10.
Suitable for fans of fantasy musicals and those that have a spare two and half hours to kill exploring the yellow brick road.
